A friend of Buddy Cianci's has filed the paperwork for the twice-convicted felon who led Providence as mayor for 21 years to run for mayor again.

Alfred Passarelli, wearing a t-shirt and jeans, filed the paperwork in the Board of Canvassers office in City Hall less than half an hour before Wednesday's deadline. Cianci announced on his radio show Wednesday he is running as an independent for a seventh term as mayor.

Passarelli said he filed the declaration of candidacy form for sentimental reasons, since he submitted the same form when Cianci ran in 1990. Passarelli, an insurance agent who lives in Johnston, said Cianci knew his father, and that he later developed a friendship with the former mayor.

State Rep. John M. Carnevale accompanied him to City Hall.
