The son of ex-Red Sox player and famed broadcaster Jerry Remy is being held on murder charges. Police say Jared Remy stabbed his girlfriend to death in their Waltham apartment Thursday night.
Police called it an act of domestic violence. Thursday night around 9 p.m., a flurry of 9-1-1 calls came in describing a serious fight between 34-year-old Jared Remy and his 27-year-old girlfriend Jennifer Martel at their apartment in the Windsor Village complex in Waltham.
Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Lisa McGovern:
McGovern said a neighbor tried to pull Remy off of Martel but Remy swung the knife at him. Martel died on the patio.
“Just a very sad and tragic day for two families, the community and particularly a 4-year-old girl,” he said.
According to the prosecutor, Jared Remy had appeared in court on Wednesday to face allegations that he assaulted Martel. But those charges were dropped, along with an emergency restraining order against Remy.
“I’m not even sure anyone really knows exactly what happened, what started this whole issue. We know how it ended, we’re not sure how it started,”
A few miles away from the courthouse, at the Windsor Village complex in Waltham, the couple's apartment is no longer a crime scene. On the patio is a dried pool of blood, beside a small pink plastic chair.
Neighbor Sean Andrew said he didn’t know the couple but can’t believe what happened.
“It’s obviously very sad. It’s kind of crazy it happened right here. It seems like a very safe community. It seems like an isolated event,” Andrew said.
