As opening statements got underway in the James “Whitey” Bulger trial Wednesday, Emily Rooney examined the decades long saga of Boston’s most notorious gangster on a special one-hour Greater Boston.

The feature excerpted the 2001 documentary, The Outlaw and the Lawman; interviews Rooney conducted with known Whitey associates,  Kevin Weeks and John "RED" Shea; an interview with Lindsey Cyr, the mother of Whitey's only known child who died at the age of 6; and a sit down with former FBI agent John J. Connolly, Jr., who is now serving a 40 year prison sentence.

Below is an excerpt from the Greater Boston special featuring an interview with former FBI agent John Connolly. Connolly is currently serving a 40 year prison term for second degree murder, racketeering and obstruction of justice for informing Bulger and Stephen "The Rifleman" Flemmi about their indictments. This was one of his only on-camera interviews at the time it was taped in October 1998.
