A Medford teenager was found safe after spending two days alone after getting lost skiing on Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine.

Ethan Austin, spokesman for Sugarloaf Mountain Resort said it’s a huge relief for Nicholas Joy and his family.

“He obviously made some good decisions while he was out there,” Austin said. “He was able to keep himself warm enough, stay coherent. It is almost miraculous and we’re just incredibly relieved and incredibly happy for him and his family and for everyone involved that it turned out the way it did.”

Austin said it’s not uncommon for skiers to go off course, but not to this extreme.

“Typically what happens is we’re able to either locate them quickly, or even the majority of the time, just direct them back to a safe area,” Austin said. “People sometimes just get disoriented and just need to be told the right direction to go. What was exceptional about this case was just how long he was missing for.”

Resort officials will review their search procedures over the next couple days.

“We’ll hope to talk to Nicholas and find out exactly how he ended up where he did and what occurred,” Austin said. “If there’s things that we can do going forward to prevent that from happening or to improve the way we were able to respond to these types of things, that is something we will want to do.”
