Weeks after an earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in Haiti, the country is struggling to recover in the face of a public health crisis, a democracy rocked by a presidential assassination earlier this summer and longstanding social inequality. Jim Braude was joined on Greater Boston by Dr. Louise Ivers, a former resident of Haiti and the executive director of Massachusetts General Hospital’s Center for Global Health, to discuss the challenges she saw on her recent return there to help with recovery efforts.
Ivers described the conditions as “devastating” and said that gang activity has made recovery challenging for a region already struggling.
“It’s important to remember that this part of Haiti, this southern part, is already quite rural. Even on a good day, the roads are quite tricky. Access to water, food security is already a challenge,” she said. “And just five years ago, Hurricane Matthew devastated this whole area…. People here are still recovering their livelihood from that.”
