Sir Kim Darroch, Britain's ambassador to the United States, resigned Wednesday following a leak of his classified cables which criticized President Donald Trump. The leaked comments were first published by The Daily Mail on Sunday. How Isabel Oakeshott, the journalist who wrote the piece, got the leaked emails is still unconfirmed.
CNN analyst Juliette Kayyem joined Boston Public Radio on Wednesday to discuss this situation as well as the fate of the United Kingdom under Boris Johnson's leadership.
Kayyem first speculated about how Oakeshott acquired the leaked memos.
"How did a pro-Brexit reporter, a woman who basically is pro-Boris Johnson, get hold of what are really the gems of the diplomatic community which are the secret cables? My point is that they were either leaked from internally or, [as] the British are investigating, whether a foreign entity was involved," she said.
Prime Minister Theresa May expressed regret at Darroch's resignation, while Boris Johnson failed to support him.
"Boris Johnson is crying fake tears today, saying it's such a shame that the ambassador resigned. But apparently, in a debate last night, he made it clear he did not have the ambassador's back, unlike Theresa May," Kayyem said.
Kayyem predicted how the future of the U.K. will change with Johnson at the helm of its government.
"To the unbecoming, barbaric, disgusting, male chauvinistic personality, he is very similar to Trump. He has allegations against him regarding sexual misconduct. So we're going to have this testosterone-laden type of leadership in Britain as well," Kayyem said.
Kayyem said she worries that Islamophobia will increase across Britain if Johnson is elected.
"Boris Johnson is more aggressively an Islamophobe than even Donald Trump. The things that come out of his mouth you just can't believe — they're similar to the things that come out of Trump's mouth when it comes to Mexicans and immigrants. And I do worry about that in Britain you're going to see a rise in Islamophobia."
