On Monday, the Trump administration officially informed the United Nations of their intention to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement. Under the agreement’s framework, the U.S. is now in the process to fully withdraw from the agreement on Nov. 3, 2020.
WCAI Reporter Heather Goldstone said that the American pull out has spurred other signatories to the agreement into action, and forced them to forge ahead with a new global framework to fight climate change without the United States.
“[The withdrawal] triggered more of an international diplomatic effort to really make sure that the U.S. pulling out does not derail the efforts more internationally and more globally to address climate change,” Goldstone said during an interview with Boston Public Radio on Wednesday.
Though the decision has been met with criticism, particularly from environmental advocates, Goldstone said that she does not believe the decision is irreversible, and that it is within reason that another administration could re-enter the agreement.
