1. Newton Mayor Setti Warren withdrew from the Democratic race for the party’s gubernatorial nomination just days before the Republicans nominate Charlie Baker for a second term.
2. Since Warren was the Democrat with the most electoral experience in the race, his withdrawal is another indication that the political marketplace favors Baker.
3. Money isn’t everything in politics, but it helps. The GOP war chest for the governor's campaign tops $11 million. At the moment, that’s more than all three Democrats combined. Warren, for example, has about $51,000 in the bank.
4. The Democrats don’t hold their convention until June. But expect the contest between Jay Gonzales, a former Deval Patrick official, and Robert Massie, a former candidate for Lt. Gov., to become sharper. It’s been a love fest so far.
5. To my mind, Massie won the battle of the press releases today. At 7:02 a.m., his campaign issue issued the following statement: "When a lack of money forces an excellent candidate to withdraw, it is yet another sign that our electoral system is broken. Setti Warren and I have been friends for many years, and we have enjoyed seeing one another on the campaign trail. Though money matters, I know that what we have is much more valuable: the growing desire of the people of Massachusetts for a more just economy, more affordable healthcare, a cleaner environment, and a governor who will stand up to Trump."
