This week, Jared Bowen experiences a concert for one and gives us a preview of the new "Downton Abbey" film! Plus, a review of “The Crucible” at Central Square Theater.
“Concert for One,” presented for free by Celebrity Series of Boston, Sept. 20-29

One musician, one audience member, and one minute of music. That’s what Celebrity Series has in store for those who participate in “Concert for One,” a free concert series at the Rose Kennedy Greenway and Harvard University’s Science Center Plaza. Created by violist and New England Conservatory graduate Rayna Yun Chou, the concerts are performed inside repurposed shipping containers to minimize distractions and allow for concentrated, intimate listening experiences.
“I feel vulnerable, but empowering at the same time,” says Chou of her performances. “There is something absolutely magical and surreal, especially in our world today, to know that this minute belongs to just us.”
“The Crucible,” presented by Central Square Theater through Oct. 20

Ever innovative New York theater company Bedlam brings Arthur Miller’s “The Crucible” to Central Square Theater in Cambridge. The play tells the story of accusations and mass hysteria that resulted in the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692. Helmed by Bedlam’s artistic director Eric Tucker, this “Crucible” is a faithful rendition of the original text that puts the young women accusers in a new context.
“While a production that seems to still be finding itself in style and tone,” says Jared, “this 'Crucible' places an intriguing emphasis on Salem’s young accusers, giving it an of-the-moment urgency.”
“Downton Abbey,” in theaters nationwide Sept. 20

Downton fans rejoice — “Downton Abbey” the film is finally here! Picking up where the Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winning series ended in 2016, this new film transports audiences back to the Crawley family estate for their biggest event yet — a royal visit from the king and queen of England. Written by series creator Julian Fellowes, the Downton film unites the original cast with some fresh faces for another glamourous tale of romance, scandal, and celebration.
“All the Downton deliciousness beloved from the television series is now served up on the big screen,” says Jared. “It feels like a wonderful family reunion.”
