Former Homeland Security official Juliette Kayyem said on Greater Boston that some Republican leaders have nurtured violence or remained silent, which can lead to attacks like the one on Pelosi.
She said violent extremism is becoming more tolerated in the Republican party.
"This is the moment to begin that purging of that element of the GOP, in particular after Friday's attack against the Pelosi family, and they just can't seem to get themselves to do it," Kayyem said.
