Former University of Michigan football player Chuck Christian was one of many survivors who was sexually assaulted by now-deceased university physician Dr. Robert Anderson. Christian told Jim Braude on Greater Boston Wednesday that other survivors should speak up without feeling ashamed.
"I just want everyone to know that this is not your fault. What happened to you is not a reflection of you. It's a reflection of the predator," said Christian, addressing fellow survivors of abuse.
As a result of the painful physical exams Christian endured in college, he avoided doctors later in life until he found out he had late-stage prostate cancer, which he has been fighting for years.
"I would like to see all of the men who have been violated to start going to see a doctor. Do not do like I did. I waited too late to go, and now I'm fighting for my life every day. I have a time bomb in my body that's waiting to go off at any point," said Christian.
The University of Michigan has settled a lawsuit agreeing to pay the victims of abuse. However, Christian said it isn't enough.
"Michigan has apologized for what Anderson has done to us, but Michigan never apologized or [took] responsibility for what they allowed and protected Anderson to do to us," Christian said.
