Businesswomen have been making headlines recently — from Yahoo! CEO Marissa Mayer's controversial stance against telecommuting to Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg's upcoming 60 Minutes interview, which will air March 10.
With this flurry of focus on women at the top of the corporate ladder, we dug into our archives to share an interview with Mayer when she was a Vice President at Google. The segment also features insight into the role gender plays in the boardroom from Fox Business Network Anchor Liz Claman.
Mayer has taken heat for insisting that employees come to the office rather than work from home. In a recent New York Times op-ed, University of Texas Austin Professor Jennifer Glass argued that employees can be as productive at home as at work — and that 21st century companies should respect their employees' need for flexability and personal time.
"But companies like Yahoo will not get more out of their employees by watching them like hawks and monitoring their every move," Glass said. "Nor can they recreate the dynamism of their founding moment by trying to return to a perpetual organizational adolescence. The 37-year-old Ms. Mayer, new mother, may have yet to learn that."
According to a WGBH News survey, our readers agree with Glass. 63% of respondents think that Mayer made the wrong decision by calling employees back into the office.
Here in the newsroom, we're looking forward to Sandberg's 60 Minutes interview. Sandberg has long been an advocate for women in the business world. Her book, "Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead" focuses on the lingering glass ceiling and looks for ways women can smash through it. Though you might never have realized it, Innovation Hub is a show hosted and produced entirely by women — and we're always looking for inspiration.
