Lil Nas X been a sensation ever since his song "Old Town Road" broke records and sparked a discussion around race and country music.

We caught up with the musician before his performance at Boston Calling to hear about his mindset and upcoming album, which will include some country music.

This interview was conducted on May 25, 2019 by Tori Bedford for WGBH, at the Boston Calling Music Festival.

How's it going today?

Lil Nas X: It's going great.

Where's Billy Ray?

Lil Nas X: Where's Billy Ray? He's probably back in L.A. or he's on tour right now.

In light of the Billboard controversy and then the immediate huge success — how are you feeling about country music and people of color? Do you feel like there's really going to be… are you carving out a space?

Lil Nas X: I honestly have no idea about anything but I'm just going with the flow. Sorry.

I just I wonder what it feels like to have been on the Billboard for this long?

Lil Nas X: It feels unreal, like, it's not just, you know, the number one spot for that long. It's incredible. Yeah.

How do you follow that? What do you have planned for your next steps?

Lil Nas X: I have an amazing E.P. and then following that we'll be announcing an album that will be just so outstanding that I can't even put it into words, you know?

And it's more country music?

Lil Nas X: There will be some within, but you know, it's a lot of everything though.
