Over the weekend, Ellen DeGeneres found herself seated next to President George W. Bush at a football game, and the internet went wild.
Does it matter that DeGeneres, who risked her career in 1997 by coming out, is friendly with the former president who made fighting same-sex marriage a key part of his political aspirations?
"I don't see how kindness in that situation or friendliness makes any difference in whether or not you advance the cause," Sue O'Connell told Boston Public Radio Wednesday. "I think if you're going to sit with any president there's going to be a list of things they didn't do. Obama was famously not supporting same-sex marriage during his presidency."
O'Connell is co-publisher of Bay Windows and the South End News, in-depth political reporter for NECN and the host of WGBH's Lunch Hour Live.
