Boston Globe columnist Alex Beam isn’t surprised that people are not reading as many books today. As an avid reader, Beam said he was surprised to find out that not everyone’s appetites for the written word isn’t as voracious as his. During an interview with Boston Public Radio on Wednesday, Beam said he realized he may be in the minority when a woman approached him in the park to congratulate him for reading a book.

“What’s going on here?” Beam said. “Is this some new isolated category?”

Beam contended that focusing so much on the issue may amount to “effete nonsense,” but he is saddened to know that an entire industry has been designed to stock libraries purely for aesthetic purposes.
