Boston (August 18, 2022) - Boston public media producer GBH announced today that FRONTLINE and CAI have been honored with 2023 National Edward R. Murrow Awards by the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA). The awards recognize CAI, the Cape, Coast and Islands NPR station, in the categories of Excellence in Innovation, Breaking News Coverage, and Feature Reporting and pay tribute to the GBH series FRONTLINE for a news documentary produced in collaboration with ProPublica that investigates how lies about election fraud made their way to the center of American politics.
"These awards highlight the dedication of our local and national news teams and an unwavering commitment to excellent journalism," said Susan Goldberg, president and CEO of GBH. "I'm proud of our CAI and FRONTLINE teams for showcasing innovation and ingenuity in their coverage and reporting from the center of some of the year's most important stories."
In partnership with ProPublica, FRONTLINE — the investigative journalism series produced at GBH — won in the "News Documentary" category for " The Plot to Overturn the Election." The timely documentary traces the hidden sources of misinformation about the 2020 election, demonstrating how a small group of people had an outsized impact on the crisis of democratic legitimacy in America.
CAI, the Cape, Coast and Islands NPR station, was recognized with a station record of three National Murrow awards, building on the
five regional wins announced in May.
- In the Breaking News category, CAI won for " Migrants Landed Unannounced on Martha's Vineyard; Island Mobilizes to Help as a National Story Grows," the outlet's rapid response to the unexpected arrival of 50 migrants on Martha's Vineyard as part of a complex series of politically charged events that put the island on the center stage of the national conversation.
- CAI's collaborative radio project, “ Falmouth to Falmouth: Connecting Cornwall to Cape Cod, won Excellence in Innovation. Based in Falmouth, Massachusetts, the radio station connected with SourceFM, a community radio station in Falmouth, United Kingdom. Together, the two stations presented hour-long conversations between individuals from each Falmouth about their similarities and differences in life on the opposite Atlantic Coasts.
- " Old Ladies' dive into Cape ponds seeking trash, emerge triumphant" won in the Feature Reporting category. The CAI piece follows Old Ladies Against Underwater Garbage (OLAUG), a group of women dedicated to cleaning the freshwater ponds of Cape Cod one piece of trash at a time.
