BOSTON (May 22, 2018) WGBH’s televised singing competition, Sing That Thing!, has announced its Season 4 champions, selected from 18 groups -- divided into high school, college and adult categories. After performing for the three expert coaches, the winners in each category were awarded during the season finale, which aired on Friday, May 25, at 8pm on WGBH 2.

  • The Thursdays from Chelmsford High School and the Rice Street Singers from Wellesley High School tied in the High School category, with performances of “Easy As I Go” by The Thursdays composer Emily Bruce and folk song “Mr. Froggie” respectively.
  • Miscellania from Bowdoin College took the College category title with their performance of “Bottom of the River” by Delta Rae/Adrienne White.
  • Attleboro-based Oure Pleasure Singers won in the Adult category with their take on “When You Wish Upon A Star” by Leigh Harline & Ned Washington/Nancy Wertsch.

Coaches Anthony Trecek-King, Annette Philip and Jared Bowen evaluated groups based on intonation and rhythm, as well as the complexity, versatility, stagecraft and audience appeal of their performances.

“Bravo to our Season 4 winners. Your dedication and talent impressed the coaches throughout the competition,” said Sing That Thing! co-executive producer Patricia Alvarado Núñez. “Your superb performances were inspirational to viewers throughout New England.”

Eighteen amateur singing groups from across New England were selected to appear on Season 4 of Sing That Thing! During the series, viewers met groups specializing in a variety of a cappella music genres, including gospel, jazz, barbershop, Renaissance, pop and classical. A live-to-tape finale featured the top two groups from each category presenting their unique spin on a song of their choice.

The Sing That Thing! coaches are Anthony Trecek-King, president and artistic director of the Boston Children’s Chorus; Annette Philip, a vocalist, composer/arranger and faculty member at Berklee College of Music and winner of the 2014 USA National A Cappella Champions and the 2017 International Harmony Sweepstakes A Cappella Championship with her quartet, Women of the World; and Jared Bowen, WGBH News executive arts editor and host of WGBH’s Open Studio with Jared Bowen, Boston television’s only local arts series. Together, the coaches provided detailed feedback to each group and ultimately determined which ones advanced to the next round.

With uplifting performances in communities across New England, group singing can bring people together from all backgrounds. I’m proud that WGBH can illustrate the astounding power of vocal music,” said Liz Cheng, WGBH’s general manager for television and co-executive producer of Sing That Thing! “The series continues to spotlight New England’s brightest voices and reinforces our region’s strong commitment to the arts.”

Sing That Thing! is sponsored by Emerson College and Eastern Bank, with additional funding from Eran and Yukiko Egozy. The series is produced by public media producer WGBH, in partnership with Emerson College and with WGBY (Springfield, MA,) Maine Public, New Hampshire Public Television, Vermont PBS and CPTV - Connecticut Public Television.
