Boston, MA (May 16, 2023) – GBH News is transforming its broadcast line-up by developing new programming, reinforcing its commitment to deliver even more local content across multiple platforms. This transformation will include expanded coverage of the region’s vibrant arts and culture scene. As part of this shift, the highly respected television show Open Studio will come to an end on June 2 in order to make way for the GBH team to increase arts and culture coverage in different formats and on more platforms including audio and video on radio, gbh.org, YouTube and others.
“We are very lucky to be able to build upon the success of Open Studio and the talent and ongoing commitment to arts in the region that Jared Bowen has exemplified over the years,” said Pam Johnston, general manager of GBH News. “GBH News is uniquely positioned to elevate our excellent culture unit to present original, timely, distinctive, and diverse local arts stories and conversations. We will be tapping into our entire GBH News Culture team as well as other GBH talent whose work is at the intersection of culture and local news.”

We’ve had the privilege of showcasing the depth and breadth of Boston’s incredible arts and culture scene through Jared’s eyes,” said GBH President and CEO Susan Goldberg. “We will be building on that strength as well as on GBH’s long legacy as a leader in culture content. GBH continues to be deeply committed to covering the local scene.”

Also, beginning June 4, Stories from the Stage, a long-running GBH and WORLD series, will be transformed into a weekly, hour-long radio show. Hosted by Theresa Okokon and Wes Hazard, Stories from the Stage offers tales of love and loss, amazing adventures, incredible surprises and unexpected triumphs from ordinary people. The show will air on Sunday Nights at 7 p.m. on GBH 89.7.
And, as happens every summer, both Basic Black and Greater Boston will be on hiatus beginning June 23, 2023, returning in the early fall.
The Takeaway, a show produced by WNYC, is ending its run on June 2, 2023. The show, which currently airs weekdays at 2 p.m., will be replaced by the second hour of 1A, a WAMU production which airs its first hour on 89.7 at 10 a.m.
