Molly of Denali Scriptwriting Fellowship

The Molly of Denali Scriptwriting Fellowship is a WGBH program to engage and collaborate with writers from Alaska Native communities in the production of the children’s series Molly of Denali. Our hope is that Fellows can make a meaningful impact on the way Native peoples are represented on-screen.

Molly of Denali is an animated, action-adventure, comedy series featuring the adventures of Molly Mabray, a 10-year-old Alaska Native girl living in interior Alaska who runs the Denali Trading Post with her family. The project was developed in response to a PBS KIDS Ready To Learn RFP seeking proposals for a multiplatform property for children ages 4 to 8 with the goal of teaching informational text. Molly of Denali premieres on PBS in July 2019.
Funded by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and supported by PBS, the Scriptwriting Fellowship engages promising Alaska Native writers to develop narratives based on their own experiences and gives them the opportunity to hear from children’s media executives and understand how to get their work made for public media.

The five-day Fellowship is also part of a larger effort to engage Alaska Native/Native American people into all aspects of the production of the series.

Fellowship requirements:
  • You must be 21 years or older at the time of entry.
  • You must be a permanent legal resident of the United States with a valid passport.
  • You must be willing and able to complete one, 11-minute script per the terms of the Fellowship.

The Scriptwriting Fellowship will take place in early November 2018. Up to six fellows will be chosen from an application and interview process. The Fellowship will be five days and cover all aspects of writing for Molly of Denali as well as for children’s media in general. This will be a hands-on, workshop-style program: Fellows are expected to leave the Fellowship with a completed outline for one Molly of Denali script. Following the Fellowship, Fellows will be guided to write one, 11-minute script that may be used in Season 1. Transportation and accommodation costs will be covered by WGBH.

The online application closed at 5p ET on Friday, October 19, 2018.
