It’s not every day that the worlds of Netflix, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW and superstar Ryan Reynolds converge.

As Netflix released its blockbuster Red Notice, starring Reynolds, an ANTIQUES ROADSHOW social video —also released by Netflix and featuring Reynolds—exploded online, scooping up more than 34 million views.

In Red Notice, which debuted in mid-November, Reynolds plays the world’s most wanted art thief, charming his way across the globe. In the two-minute ANTIQUES ROADSHOW segment, he brings a stolen Cleopatra egg from 30 B.C. to appraiser Lark E. Mason, who delivers the perfect straight man performance.

“Netflix reached out to PBS with this idea and PBS connected ROADSHOW to Netflix,” said Marsha Bemko, executive producer of the most-watched ongoing series on PBS. “We are very lucky.”

But before the series agreed to be party to the ruse, they scrutinized everything about the film, she said.

“We had to be sure that it was something that we'd be okay aligning ourselves with. It had to be a clean film, something that we wouldn't be embarrassed by,” said Bemko.

And she insisted on approving the final cut. “After all, they were making the clip to look like we produced it,” she said.

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW staff—Sam Farrell, senior producer; Adam Monahan, producer; Chris Larson, business manager, and Hannah Auerbach, audience engagement manager—all traveled to Netflix’s New York City offices for the filming.

They even hauled out an old set from storage for the occasion.

“Since we now record in historic locations, we had put the old set that we used to use in convention halls in storage,” said Bemko. “I’m glad we didn’t throw it out—you never know what the future will bring.”

With this out-of-the blue overture, the series also discovered that Reynolds is a big fan of the program.

He tweeted on the day the video launched, “I was on #Antiques Roadshow. I haven’t been this star struck since I got into an elevator with Johnny Cash back in ’99.”

The whole adventure became a huge opportunity for the GBH series, as well as a point of pride, said Bemko.

“This introduced a new audience to ROADSHOW—people who will find this funny and start to watch the show,” she said.

“We are really proud of the fact that Netflix came knocking on our door. They want our audience as much as we want the chance to introduce ROADSHOW to theirs.”

But the bottom line, as always on ANTIQUES ROADSHOW: What’s the egg worth?

“If we could clear up the complications of how you acquired it,” Mason says with a straight face, “this could sell for over 100 million dollars at auction.”

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW’s 26th season premieres on January 3 at 8pm on GBH 2, and plans for a TikTok launch are underway. Watch the program here.
