When the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) announced its 2020 Salute to Excellence Award nominations, GBH News received six nods — more than any other media organization in the Top 15 Radio and Television Markets categories.
The NABJ Awards recognize the best reporting about the Black experience or issues affecting the Black community. Winners will be announced during a virtual ceremony on Saturday, December 19.
Five nominations came in the radio category:
- GBH News host and commentator Callie Crossley is assured a win in the Commentary category, where two of her pieces, The Betrayal of Jaz-Z’s Deal with the NFL and A Bulletproof Memorial for Emmett Till and A President’s Perversion of Lynching’s History are vying for the top honor.
- Returning African American Experiences to History’s Archives, an Under the Radar with Callie Crossley segment, was recognized in the Public Affairs: Segment category.
- The Long Journey North: The Forgotten Story of the Reverse Freedom Rides of 1962 received a nomination in the Documentary category. The story was written by GBH News reporter Gabrielle Emanuel, edited by senior managing editor Sean Corcoran and includes a video by senior digital producer Emily Judem. As the only contender in this category, it’s also assured a win.
- After Racist Incident, MFA Opens the Door to Change, reported by senior investigative reporter Phillip Martin and edited by senior editor Ken Cooper, was recognized in the Feature category.
In television, GBH received a nomination for an episode of Basic Black, the longest running program on public television focusing on the interests of people of color:
- The Men of Color and Mental Health episode earned a nomination in the Public Affairs: Interview/Discussion category. The GBH production is hosted by Callie Crossley; Delores Edwards is the executive producer, Kavontae Smalls and Bob Judge are associate producers and Rob Fagnant is director.
