GBH Workforce Demographic Data

For more than 70 years, GBH has lived its mission to enrich people's lives through programs and services that educate, inspire, and entertain, fostering citizenship and culture, the joy of learning, and the power of diverse perspectives.

Our mission is evergreen. We hold ourselves accountable to making sure that we โ€œwiden our lens" in all the work we do, including how and with whom we do it. This means we are constantly striving to make a positive difference for our employees and for the public we serve, ensuring that the voices and perspectives of those who work for GBH are as multifaceted, varied, and interconnected as those of the stories we tell.

From our National productions to Legal, Childrenโ€™s Media & Education to Development, we understand that, as a leader in public media, we have a responsibility to be transparent regarding the demographic make-up of our workforce. As with many public media organizations, GBH is on a journey to reimagine workplace culture. Thanks to our employees, board, contributors and community, we continue to deepen our understanding of what it truly means to belong - and that will never stop mattering to us.

To meet this goal, we continue to:

  • Build a workforce and board that embodies the communities we serve.
  • Focus on hiring and retaining employees who come from a variety of lived experiences while providing professional growth opportunities andโ€“togetherโ€“mutually shaping GBH's culture and community.
  • Ensure that, just as we are building an inclusive and equitable culture for our employees, we do the same for our interns so theyโ€™re prepared to become the industry leaders of tomorrow.

Data About Our Workforce and Boards

Below, we are providing data on race and gender identity for our staff as of December 31, 2020 through December 31, 2023. Our workforce demographic information is organized by the following groups*:

Workforce (full-time and part-time staff employees and project contract employees) also including:

  • Executive Leadership (President/CEO, COO, Executive Team members)
  • Content Teams (National Productions, Children's Media and Education, World Channel/Local TV)
  • News Teams (Local Newsroom/Radio, The World)
  • New Hires and Interns

Employee data is based on employee self-identification as maintained in our system of record. Data on the composition of our boards will be updated and posted soon. The term "BIPOC" used throughout the data sets stands for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (including those identifying as Asian or Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islanders; Middle Eastern or North African; or being ethnically Hispanic or Latino/a/x). Our internal demographic data includes expanded gender identity options, and these categories of data will be added to future iterations of our public-facing report.

*We are currently reviewing updated demographic information on our boards.
