Community Canvas is an initiative presented by The Culture Show where GBH features artwork from community members on our Digital Mural.
Today’s mural, All Pumped Up by Sylvia Vander Sluis, is a whimsical, mixed-media sculpture featuring a pair of bold eyes and a flamboyant headdress. The piece is part of a series on the search for joy and transformation.
“I use intense color and adornment to communicate the power of intense feelings,” Vander Sluis says. “Mask-like figures allude to how we play with identity and illusion.”
Vander Sluis has a BFA from Syracuse University and MFA from Western Michigan University. She is a sculptor living in central Mass. and has been a member of Fountain Street Gallery and associate member of Boston Sculptors Gallery.
