In honor of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, GBH is broadcasting Resistance: They Fought Back.
Today, almost 80 years after the Holocaust, this story remains largely unknown with many believing that “Jews went to their deaths like sheep to the slaughter.” But this is where the real story begins. Jews did not go as sheep to the slaughter. They fought back. This feature documentary, told by survivors, their children, and expert witnesses from the U.S., Israel, and Europe, is a revelation based on extensive research. It presents evidence that Jews fought back, with or without weapons, in the ghettos, the forests, and even in death camps where they led six uprisings against the Germans. Filmed in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Israel, the film provides a much-needed corrective to the myth of Jewish passivity. The executive producer and co-director is Paula S. Apsell, former executive producer of the GBH/PBS science series NOVA.
