Named for the Great Blue Hill site of its original transmitter, GBH traces its roots to the Lowell Institute’s mission to provide “public lectures for the benefit of the citizens of Boston.” Ralph Lowell, Lowell Institute Trustee, Boston banker, philanthropist, and GBH’s founding father, championed broadcasting these lectures on the radio, so the Lowell Institute incorporated GBH in 1951.  GBH’s first radio broadcast of a Boston Symphony Orchestra concert aired today. Happy birthday, GBH, and thank you Ralph Lowell!
