The Lenny Zakim Fund

Founded on the belief that effective social change can be created at the grassroots, The Lenny Zakim Fund (LZF) identifies, supports, and connects small community based organizations operation "below the radar screen" of other foundations and government agencies. The Lenny Zakim Fund makes small and meaningful grants to support some of the most amazing and effective grassroots programs in Massachusetts. Our goal is to support these agencies in every way that we can, so we do a whole lot more than making grants. The Lenny Zakim Fund continually nurtures these organizations toward growth and sustainability by providing the resources, training and other supports that are often unavailable to small organizations.

  • This country has long welcomed those who are persecuted and oppressed in their home countries and offered them asylum. But what does that really mean? What is it like to be an asylum seeker? How do you apply for asylum? How long does the asylum process take? What if you don't speak English? Can you still apply for asylum even if you are in the United States undocumented? Are asylum seekers also refugees? What's going on at the migrant detention centers? An expert panel joins the Zakim Builders Breakfast to explain the process of asylum seeking and help foster understanding of the complexity of asylum and granting legal status.

  • Hear from a panel of experts on the issues surrounding the renewals of Temporary Protected Status for many of the immigrants living in Massachusetts. This group of advocates works closely with individuals to navigate the process for continuing to live in the U.S. while situations in their countries of origin remain difficult and make it impossible for them to return home. The Lenny Zakim Fund Award Bridge Builder Breakfasts bring donors and grantees together to hear from thoughtful leaders and experts on topics that are current and vital to the LZF mission and community. • The United States leads the world in the rate of incarceration - the number of people in prisons in the US has more than quadrupled over the last forty years. Racial disparities are a hallmark of incarceration today, families are torn apart, and communities disrupted by the school to prison pipeline. The opportunities for education and true rehabilitation for those returning to their communities are few and far between. The Massachusetts legislature is creating reform for our state right at this moment. Hear from four Lenny Zakim Fund grantees who are working for that reform.

  • Every day in the news, on social media, around the dinner table, and in presidential debates we learn more and more about the immense challenges facing immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in our own communities and around the world. Who are the people seeking safety and a new life? What challenges do they face? What are the public policy issues? How are the challenges and the policy issues being addressed right now? Are there opportunities for you, your business, your community to be positively engaged? Three experts on immigration, refugees, and asylum seekers discuss people and policy, challenges and answers.
