American Ancestors/NEHGS and Boston Public Library present this virtual event in the American Stories, Inspiration Today author series. Take a glimpse into the beloved novelist’s inner world, shaped by family, art, and literature: a discussion of Claire Messud’s latest work, Kant's Little Prussian Head and Other Reasons Why I Write: An Autobiography in Essays. In twenty-six intimate, brilliant, and funny essays, Messud reflects on her own life and family and meditates on contemporary classic works of literature as she explores her own drive to write. Claire Messud is the author of six works of fiction including the New York Times bestsellers The Emperor’s Children and The Burning Girl, which was also a finalist for the Los Angeles Times Book Prize Moderator Dani Shapiro is novelist, memoirist, and creator and host of the Family Secrets podcast This virtual author event is free the public.

Claire Messud is the author of six novels including The Emperor’s Children (2006), The Woman Upstairs (2013), and The Burning Girl (2017). Her seventh, This Strange Eventful History, will be published in 2024. She is also the Joseph Y. Bae and Janice Lee Senior Lecturer on Fiction at Harvard University, Department of English. She is the author of several novels including _The Emperor's Children_ (2006), _The Woman Upstairs_ (2013), and _The Burning Girl_ (2017). Her new novel, _This Strange Eventful History_, will be published in 2024.

**Dani Shapiro** is the author of the instant New York Times best selling memoir, Inheritance, which was published in January 2019 by Knopf. Her other books include the memoirs Hourglass, Still Writing, Devotion, and Slow Motion, and five novels including Black & White and Family History. Along with teaching writing workshops around the world, Dani has taught at Columbia and New York University, and is the cofounder of the Sirenland Writers Conference in Positano, Italy.
