Introducing the EcoRestoration Alliance

In partnership with:
Date and time
Monday, March 28, 2022

The EcoRestoration Alliance grew out of the work of Biodiversity for a Livable Climate. The Alliance is a rapidly growing global collaboration of scientists, thought leaders, conservationists, on-the-ground restoration practitioners and storytellers whose work challenges the prevailing view that reducing fossil fuel use at this late date can still result in the global cooling that we need. The Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) tells us that restoring biodiversity and healthy ecosystems must receive the full attention it has never had before as the path forward. The panel will focus on the global grassroots level movement, that is doing this work. The panel is composed by Alliance members who believe that ecosystem restoration can be done in a way that supports and empowers local communities. Healthy ecosystems like forests, grasslands, wetlands, and regenerative farmlands with year-round cover crops cool the biosphere and tame extreme weather. ### Resources: * [Biodiversity for a Liveable Climate's website](https://bio4climate.org/) * [Ecorestoration Alliance website](http://ecorestorationalliance.net) * [John D. A biological psychologist, entrepreneur, human-computer interaction researcher and digital community organizer, Dr. Schull is the founder of e-NABLE, an online philanthropic community that makes free open-source 3D-printed prosthetic hands and arms for children and adults with upper limb differences. Concerned about the climate crisis and impressed by recognition that healthy ecosystems are the earth's air conditioning system, Schull is now helping to forge an online collaborative community of ecorestoration practitioners, scientists and storytellers inspired and empowered by the insight that reversing biodiversity loss and restoring healthy ecosystems normalizes climate and protects against warming, storming, fires, floods and droughts. Their aim is to mobilize millions to reverse global warming by restoring the planetary air conditioning system.

John Dennis Liu is a Chinese American film-maker and ecologist. In 1981, Liu helped set up the CBS News bureau in Beijing, at a time when tensions between the United States and China were lessening. He worked for CBS for more than ten years as a producer and cameraman. In 1995 he filmed the Loess Plateau in China, which was being transformed from barren and eroded ground into an oasis by the government. At this point Liu noticed the possibility of humans restoring ecosystems, rather than only destroying them and began studying ecology. In January 2015 John was named Visiting Fellow at NetherlandsInstitute of Ecology (NIOO) of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences. John is also Ecosystem Ambassador for the Commonland Foundation based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. In 2017 he founded Ecosystem Restoration Camps, a worldwide movement that aims to restore damaged ecosystems on a large scale.

Valer Clark has been restoring watersheds for almost 40 years. Starting from small rock dams known as trincheras, she has pushed the limit of what can be done in large watersheds. She has been instrumental in forming a network of organizations to focus on a wildlife corridor between the United States and Mexico. She founded and provided significant initial funding for Cuenca de los Ojos AC in Mexico and Cuenca Los Ojos 501( c )3 in the US. She serves on several boards including Borderlands Restoration Network and Fondo Mexicano para la Conservacion de la Naturaleza. Valer and her staff prioritize education of local students to understand and participate in the beauty of the land where they live through dozens of hands-on workshops. She has encouraged and supported scientific study of CLO’s restoration practices and biodiversity of CLO ranches resulting in a significant contribution to our knowledge of the Sky Island region. Valer’s outstanding conservation efforts have been recognized by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Geological Survey.

Ilse Köhler-Rollefson is an academic turned activist for sustainable livestock keeping. In 1992, after a research project with the Raika camel breeders in Rajasthan/India, she co-founded the League for Pastoral Peoples and Endogenous Livestock Development, an international advocacy organization for pastoralism. Based in Rajasthan (India), she has published more than 100 scientific papers and a popular book “Camel Karma” about her twenty years living among the Raika. Besides being the co-founder of India's first dedicated camel dairy, she frequently consults with international agencies, including at UN level. She tweets about 'good livestock keepers' at @IlseKohler and is looking forward to the publication of her next book about 'Herding. Therapy for a Broken Planet' in early 2023.
