John Kelly draws on his vast experience in diplomatic posts and with the State Department to provide background on the situation in Iran, Iraq and Lebanon and explore US options for the future. Ambassador Kelly was Assistant Secretary of State for the Near East and South Asia from 1989 to 1991 during the Gulf War and up to the Madrid Middle East Peace Conference and he was American Ambassador in Beirut from 1986 to 1988 during the war years. He held four different positions as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and has visited professionally more than 70 countries. In the spring of 2004 he participated in an independent task force of the Council on Foreign Relations which produced a report entitled *Iran: Time for a New Approach*. Kelly has published on terrorism and defense issues and appears on TV and radio.
