We’re talking brews: beer, coffee, tea and… music! WGBH’s BostonTalks series connects you with local leaders, stories, trends and each other. Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum’s Josiah George takes us back in time to the days of brewing and throwing tea overboard into the Boston Harbor. Ajiri Tea founder Sara Holby explains how the lives of women and orphans in Kenya are being improved through the tea and coffee that are purchased and brewed in Boston. Adam Ritchie’s band The Lights Out released its album on a can of Aeronaut Brewing Co. beer. That’s right—drink a brew and discover new music at the same time. Adam explains this journey. Matt DeLuca, head brewer at Castle Island Brewing Co., talks about brewing beer and using failure to the company’s advantage. Additional speakers to come. Tweet with Josiah (@bostonteaship), Sara (@ajiritea), Adam (@fontbandit), Matt (@cibrewing) and Edgar B. Herwick, III (@ebherwick3) using #BostonTalks.

While in college in Vermont during the early 2000s I became fascinated with the local craft beer market in New England. After graduation in 2005 I was able to get an entry level production job working on the packaging line at the iconic Harpoon Brewery in downtown Boston and eventually worked my way up to Senior Brewer. In 2015, after nine years at Harpoon and having worked in all facets of commercial brewing, I decided to team up with Adam Romanow in opening Castle Island Brewing Co. in Norwood, MA where I manage all areas of brewing operations.

Adam spends his time putting dents in the universe. He owns Aritchbrand, which helps brands grow, communicate and do the right thing, and plays guitar in The Lights Out, a music and light project that takes people on a trip through parallel worlds. During business hours, Adam has helped clients appear in outlets like the BBC, New York Times, Fast Company, TIME and Newsweek. After-hours, Adam has performed at South By Southwest, written songs picked up by MTV and been featured in Billboard. With T.R.I.P., Adam is combining his love of media and music to release his band’s multidimensional concept album on cans of craft beer. More at: https://youtu.be/0q3Xn3z0l0Y
Sara and her sister, Kate, co-founded Ajiri Tea Company in 2009. The goal of Ajiri is to create a sustainable cycle of employment and education and, of course, a delicious cup of tea! The word "Ajiri" means "to employ" in Swahili. They currently employ about 60 women to handcraft the labels for the tea and coffee boxes using dried bark from banana trees. The tea is handpicked on small farms in Kenya, and Ajiri purchases it directly from a cooperative of small-scale farmers. Using the same model as Newman's Own, Ajiri donates 100% of profits to their non-profit to pay school fees for orphans. This year, they are sponsoring 30 students in school. Sara lives in Somerville and works out of the MassChallenge office space.
