WGBH Events hosts a discussion about heroes and heroines. Learn from Dr. Sarah Zaidan, Joel Christian Gill, and Dyan deNapoli about superheroes and culture, history through comics, and a local hero saving the world one penguin at a time.
Dr. Sarah Zaidan is a game designer, artist and researcher whose work explores how video games and comic books can engage in a dialogue with identity, gender and civic awareness. She is Kingston University London’s first recipient of a Ph.D. by practice in superhero art and history with research findings presented in the form of an award winning video game, The Adventures of MetaMan: The Male Superhero as a Representation of Modern Western Masculinity (1940-2010). She is one of the creators and illustrators of the feminist superhero comic series My So-Called Secret Identity, in collaboration with Batman scholar Dr. Will Brooker and animation artist Susan Shore. Dr. Zaidan teaches video game design at Emerson College and is a research fellow with the Engagement Lab. Joel Christian Gill™ is the chairman, CEO, president, director of development, majority and minority stock holder, manager , co-manager, regional manager, assistant to the regional manager, receptionist, senior black correspondent and janitor of Strange Fruit Comics. He is the author/illustrator of 2 books from Fulcrum Publishing Strange Fruit vol I Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History May 2014 and Tales of the Talented Tenth Fall 2014. In his spare time he is the Chair of Foundations at the New Hampshire Institute of Art and member of The Boston Comics Roundtable. He received his MFA from Boston University and a BA from Roanoke College. Dyan deNapoli is a recognized penguin expert, educator and author. After working closely with the penguin colony at Boston’s prestigious New England Aquarium for nine years, she founded her company, The Penguin Lady, to teach audiences worldwide about the biology, behavior, and conservation of these fascinating seabirds. She has been the guest lecturer on nature cruises to Antarctica and the Galapagos Islands, and has presented her penguin programs at numerous libraries, grade schools, colleges, museums and assisted living facilities. She donates 20% of the proceeds from every appearance to penguin rescue groups. Praised for her engaging presentation style, Dyan has shared her passion for penguins with approximately 250,000 people. Dyan has appeared as the guest expert on CNN's Situation Room, BBC Radio 5 Live, ABC Radio Australia, WSCA Radio Portsmouth, Wild Moments and several other television and radio shows. She has been the content reviewer for three books about penguins, and in 2007, she authored the Penguins chapter for Scholastic Publishing’s New Book of Knowledge encyclopedia. Her forthcoming book, The Great Penguin Rescue, vividly chronicles her participation in the largest and most successful rescue of oiled animals ever undertaken. Scheduled for release by Free Press on October 26, 2010, it is currently available for pre-order wherever books are sold. Dyan is donating 20% of her proceeds from The Great Penguin Rescue to penguin rescue groups and to Gulf oil spill relief efforts. Dyan is a member of the Author’s Guild, International Women’s Writers Guild, National Marine Educators Association, Massachusetts Marine Educators, Association of Zoos & Aquariums, North Shore Women in Business, North Shore Business Forum, Home-based Businesswomen's Network and Mensa International.
