Susan Heideman and Michelle Lougee, currently in a joint exhibit at the Maud Morgan Arts Chandler Gallery in Cambridge, discuss their respective artworks and artistic approaches to nature’s variety. They also describe some similarities in the way that artists and scientists look at nature.
Susan Heideman taught art at Smith College for more than 30 years, and now concentrates on her art full-time at her studio. She creates unique paintings comprised of multiple materials that are layered and artistically sutured to reveal nature in an especially dynamic, stimulating way. Her focus on “in-between entities” in the oceans that are meant to remind us of our own primordial beginnings.
Michelle Lougee is a fiber artist, sculptor, and ceramist. She is a member of the Boston Sculptors Gallery She teaches art at various local museums and Lesley College. Her work addresses the impact of our consumerist society on nature. In an effort to raise awareness of the ocean of plastic waste in our oceans, she uses discarded plastic bags to create sculptures of marine life.
