The Marlow Murder Club, Ellis, and Mrs. Sidhu Investigates Are Diversifying the “Older Woman Sleuth” Genre
The Marlow Murder Club is a welcome addition to the MASTERPIECE tradition of female investigators outsmarting the police — and in some cases, fellow officers — to bring wrongdoers to justice. Not only does the series show three women using their life experiences and observations, but most importantly, it shows that the small English village mystery genre can include Black and Asian diaspora characters without resorting to tokenization. -
Drama Concierge: shows to fall for this November
The following are four excellent shows I think you should watch in November. Why? Because they all give off strong late autumn vibes, and there’s something for everyone. All of these series are available for GBH members to stream any time on the PBS App. -
Rivals stars Aidan Turner and Nafessa Williams On Their Characters' Outsider Status
Rivals is Hulu’s latest venture into original British series. The limited series, based on Jilly Cooper’s novel by the same name, picks up semi-thematically where Nolly and Funny Woman left off with the uber-competitive world of 1980’s UK independent television but ups the ante on discussing gender and racial politics. -
Van der Valk Season 4 Episode 6 Recap: Ciao, Bella
Last time we visited Amsterdam, we met a scary mystery assassin, a doofy billionaire, and a conspiracy theorist (and only one of them walked into a bar). And speaking of which, we kick off this week’s episode in Cliff’s bar, where the team uses security footage of the club to start searching for mystery assassin. -
Van der Valk Season 4 Episode 5 Recap: gene editing, lies, and video tape
Somehow, reader, we’re on to the last case of the season (and we still don’t have an update on the most important case yet: Hendrik’s self-diagnosed throat cancer). Speaking of which: our episode kicks off with Piet and Hendrik chilling by a fire while Piet tries to talk Hendrik into getting a second opinion. -
Van der Valk Season 4 Episode 4 Recap: breaking free
We’re back right where we left off, bird fans: in the middle of the street, whilst the crime scene techs collect evidence from the body of Meatball. While they do their thing, Piet and Hassell speculate on who would want to kill Meatball anyway: he ostensibly did his part of the job, having delivered that giant bag of money. Was it retribution for killing Gerda? Or maybe it was the fact that he saw someone else at the scene and thus could rat out the murderer. -
Remembering Cleo Sylvestre in All Creatures & Beyond
The MASTERPIECE family recently lost Dame Maggie Smith, drawing tributes from thousands of fans and entertainment industry members. However, fewer American fans have heard that Cleo Sylvestre — who most recently had a recurring role in All Creatures Great and Small — also recently passed away. A few years ago GBH Drama covered the introduction of Sylvestre’s character on All Creatures, and it feels right in this time of mourning to revisit and reflect on her long career. -
Van der Valk Season 4 Episode 3 Recap: birds of a feather
This week’s episode kicks off in what I can only describe as a gorgeous museum/art gallery with the kind of giant windows that people love and birds just hate. The irony of this description will become apparent soon. -
A Very Royal Scandal Executive Producer Karen Thrussell on journalism, Poldark, and more
A Very Royal Scandal, starring Ruth Wilson (Mrs. Wilson) and Michael Sheen, (Gallowglass, Good Omens) is a dramatization of Prince Andrew’s disastrous 2019 BBC Newsnight interview. -
Van der Valk Season 4 Episode 2 Recap: Mandy
Last week we learned that evil drug queenpin BiBi Franken, fresh off of blowing up her own son for daring to defy her, was waiting to meet Piet in whatever location would mess with him the most. So it’s not SUPER surprising that this week we’re heading right over to the crew’s beloved bar.
