Each month, Beyond The Page: A WGBH Book Club features a notable author, who takes part in a live Q&A with a WGBH personality to discuss the intricacies of that month's novel. With each monthly book selection, we also ask the author for a list of reading recommendations. For its December edition, Beyond The Page selected Emily Gray Tedrowe's The Talented Miss Farwell, an electrifying page-turner of greed and obsession, survival and self-invention that is a piercing character study of one unforgettable female con artist.
Here are five additional reading suggestions from Emily Gray Tedrowe:
Rodham by Curtis Sittenfeld. "This is a smart, funny, engaging novel that takes as its premise the question 'What if Hillary Clinton hadn't married Bill?'"
Dear Ann by Bobbie Ann Mason. "A new novel by a master writer, with love and heart and a clear-eyed view of the 1960s."
Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi. "A scientist named Gifty struggles with two forces that have shaped her: her religious beliefs, and the trauma of illness and addiction in her family."
Unseen City by Amy Shearn. "Ghosts, New York City, and a real estate mystery from the past are the elements of this wildly enjoyable recent novel."
Monogamy by Sue Miller. "A recently widowed woman looks back on the life she lived (and didn't live) with her husband, whose personality at times eclipsed her own."
What she's reading now:
The Blind Assassin by Margaret Atwood. "I'm just starting this highly-praised novel by one of our contemporary fiction treasures. Can't wait."
What's up next:
"I really want to read Valentine by Elizabeth Wetmore — I've heard such amazing things about this novel. Something to look forward to!"
