The latest episode of Open Studio with Jared Bowen looks at Iranian artist Arghavan Khosravi's first musem exhibit, Matthew López's play "The Inheritance," and an exhibit that will soon leave the Peabody Essex Museum.
First, we look at artist Arghavan Koshravi. Her first museum exhibit is on view at the Currier Museum of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire. As a young woman in Iran and immigrant to the United States, Khosravi has been subjected to many restrictions based on those identities. On the canvas, she renders it all through surrealist imagery, where she explores the themes of freedom, exile and oppression.
Next, Bowen talks to playwright Matthew López. He made history in 2021 as the first Latino to win the Tony Award for best play, " The Inheritance. " Inspired by Howard's End, "The Inheritance" is an epic play exploring how three generations of gay men grapple with the AIDS crisis. SpeakEasy Stage Company is presenting the first regional theater production of "The Inheritance," which is on stage now through June 11.
Finally, the Peabody Essex Museum exhibit " Each/Other " brings to New England the work of Indigenous artists Marie Watt and Cannupa Hanska Luger. Their art is a celebration of empathy, community and activism. The exhibition comes to an end on May 8.
