The latest episode of Open Studio with Jared Bowen looks at modern takes on literature classics Moby-Dick and The Bluest Eye.

In the New Bedford Whaling Museum's " Loomings" exhibit, named after the first chapter of Moby-Dick, artist Christopher Volpe builds upon the book's themes. Using tar in his paintings, Volpe literally draws a connection between today's oil-dependent society to Melville's vision of a doomed and destructive whaling industry. The exhibition is on view through May 8.

Jared then has a virtual chat with Lydia Diamond, the playwright behind the theatrical adaptation of Toni Morrison's The Bluest Eye. The Huntington Theatre Company's production is a faithful adaptation, which even garnered the late author’s blessing. Catch it at the Calderwood Pavilion through March 26.
