WGBH Executive Arts Editor Jared Bowen spoke with Boston Public Radio on Thursday about the open letter to 'White American Theater' that artists of color published on Monday.

"Everybody who's listening should read this letter," he said. "This was a very intentional, well thought out and constructed letter by a community who's been so frustrated by how they've been treated by the American theater."

Many would regard the American theater as a liberal bastion that supports people of color, Bowen noted, but that is not the case.

"As this letter details, ['Black, Indigenous, People of Color,' (BIPOC)] have not been supported that way systemically throughout the history of American theatre including this very moment," he said. "So you have about 300 artists of colors who've signed this letter that basically says, 'This stops now. We see you, we're calling you out on this and we are not tolerating it anymore.'"
