Mark Volpe from the Boston Symphony Orchestra and and Andreas Schulz from Germany’s Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra joined Boston Public Radio Friday to discuss Leipzig Week, which concludes on Saturday. Leipzig Week, which began in 2018, joins musicians from Germany’s Gewandhaus Orchestra (GHO) with members of the BSO and offers locals the chance to hear powerful symphonic works from some of the world’s most esteemed musicians.

“You will never hear a program like this,” said Andreas Schulz, who directs the Leipzig GHO. “It shows a lot of the sound identity of these two orchestras."

“There’s something to be said about a string section of 70 players," added Mark Volpe, managing director of the BSO. “There’s a [unique] depth to it."

“I [can] just remember one or two orchestras who have done in the past something [similar] like … a marketing campaign,” Schulz said. "But this alliance is not a marketing campaign. This [is] all based on links between the BSO and the GHO."

The partnership between the two orchestras can be traced to BSO Musical Director Andris Nelsons, who also directs the GHO.
