Shane Gillis was publicly employed by "Saturday Night Live" for mere hours, ultimately losing the gig due to uncovered videos that showed him making derogatory comments about people of Chinese descent.

"I do shock laughs for sure, but they're just silly," said Ryan Landry, playwright, lyricist, actor and founder of the Gold Dust Orphans theatrical company, on Boston Public Radio Tuesday.

"I'm okay with [him being fired], sure, we're living in a different world now," he said.

Landry contrasted Gillis' comedy with Dave Chapelle, who has also taken heat for offensive statements made in his latest Netflix special.

"Everyone has told me Dave Chapelle's new special is absolutely brilliant, and I can't wait to see it, and I know that includes a lot of stuff. But I find Dave Chapelle to be kind of brilliant," said Landry. "When Dave Chapelle confessed to his mental illness, he was just being honest, when you bring that kind of honesty -- if I don't agree with Dave Chapelle, I don't have to hate him, I just have to disagree with him."
