Every week, WGBH Arts Editor  Jared Bowen  sums up the exhibitions, theater, movies and music you should check out in and around Boston.

'Fingersmith' , presented by the American Repertory Theater through January 8

A.R.T.'s Synopsis:  "The job seems simple at first: All pickpocket Sue Trinder, played by Tracee Chimo (Bad Jews), has to do is help a con man, played by Josiah Bania, cheat a gullible young heiress (The Heart of Robin Hood's Christina Bennett Lind) out of her fortune. But nothing is quite what it seems in this mystery set in the shadows of Victorian England. Spiraling through London streets, madhouses, and a stifling mansion with a shocking secret, Sue finds herself in the most dangerous landscape of all: awakening sexuality, love, and betrayal."

Jared Says: "It's a dive into the murky world of Victorian England with all its devious denizens."

'La La Land' , in theaters December 15

Lionsgate Movies' Synopsis: "Written and directed by Academy Award (R) nominee Damien Chazelle, La La Land tells the story of Mia (Emma Stone), an aspiring actress, and Sebastian (Ryan Gosling), a dedicated jazz musician, who are struggling to make ends meet in a city known for crushing hopes and breaking hearts. Set in modern day Los Angeles, this original musical about everyday life explores the joy and pain of pursuing your dreams."

Jared Says: "An enjoyable film that may have fallen victim to its own hype."

'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' , in theaters nationwide December 16

Lucasfilm's Synopsis: "From Lucasfilm comes the first of the Star Wars standalone films, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, an all-new epic adventure. In a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction. This key event in the Star Wars timeline brings together ordinary people who choose to do extraordinary things, and in doing so, become part of something greater than themselves."

Jared Says: "Interesting, fun, enjoyable, but not groundbreaking."
