Boston’s annual Open Studios events are in full swing, giving the public a glimpse inside the private workspace of local artists. The historic Fenway Studios , home to dozens of painters, will open its doors this weekend.
The building itself is striking—a towering brick cathedral for art with a legacy so significant, it’s a National Historic Landmark.
Fenway Studios was built in 1905 after fire leveled a Boston artist enclave. City and business leaders rallied to construct this one. Designed in the arts and crafts style, it was modeled after 19th-century Parisian ateliers, the very spaces where some of the greatest painters of all time studied.
Today, more than a century on, Fenway Studios remains a highly sought-after home for artists. The waiting list for a space is years long. Its inhabitants and their work are thoroughly reviewed before they’re accepted. And tradition is paramount here—only painters allowed.
Fenway Studios is open to the public Saturday, Nov. 15 and Sunday, Nov. 16, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
