Before you indulge in the deluge of summer blockbuster films, consider this documentary with its scathing presentation of the role law enforcement played in the Bulger case. Next, plan some early Friday departures to take advantage of the 60+ venues swinging open their doors free to the public through the summer months.

Whitey: United States of America V. James J. Bulger , In theaters Friday.

Academy Award-nominated director Joe Berlinger's new documentary film follows the trial of the infamous gangster James “Whitey” Bulger, using the courtroom action as a springboard to examine accusations of multi-faceted corruption within our nation’s law enforcement and legal systems. Berlinger powerfully illustrates the government’s culpability in the Whitey saga like I’ve never seen anywhere else.

Fyvush Finkel Appearing at Mr. Finn’s Cabaret at Barrington Stage Company in Great Barrington June 29th and 30th.

Stage and screen legend Fyvush Finkel celebrates the great songs and humor of show business. Accompanied by his two sons, Ian Finkel on xylophone and Elliot Finkel on piano, the 91-year-old actor gives a first-hand account of his incredible career, spanning English and Yiddish roles, from Second Avenue in New York to television stardom. Finkel told me in our interview that he never feels his age when he's on the stage.

"I’ll be very honest with you," Finkel began. "The stage is the best cure. For any actor to go on the stage, or entertainer or whatever, you forget all about your ills, especially when you’re my age, when you’re 91. When I get up on that stage, I’m alive! I’m young again! I will never retire! Why should I retire? I don’t even know what kind of work I’m out of."
