Tony Matelli: New Gravity, On view at the Davis Museum at Wellesley College through July 20th.

This is Matelli's first solo exhibition in a U.S. museum, on view at the Davis Museum through July 20. Comprised of recent works from the past five years as well as a significant number of new works created specifically for the Davis, the exhibition focuses on the artist’s discursive use of time, ambivalence, banality and wonder. Often employing a hyper-realistic idiom, Matelli upends expectations and to challenge perceptions of reality.

The sculptor garnered some negative attention from his piece "Sleepwalker" , placed outside the Davis on the Wellesley College campus. He told me during our interview, "I’m really interested in the grotesque and the grotesque is a confluence of irreconcilable forces you know, the grotesque is something that is humorous and frightening combined at the same time."

Rich Girl Plays at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston through April 26th.

When sheltered Claudine meets starving artist Henry, she falls head over heels. But her mother, a tough-talking celebrity financial guru, has her doubts: Is Henry everything her daughter deserves or is he only after her money? Rich Girl, a modern day take on the classic play and film The Heiress, is a clever new comedy about women, men, mothers, and money – but not necessarily in that order.

Coming up on Open Studio

Jared covers the Wellesley campus exhibit by Tony Matelli, the artist who created the controversial sculpture Sleepwaker, the focus of a furious debate about public art. Jared also sits down with author, director, and actor James Fluhr for a conversation on his New Repertory Theatre debut solo performance, Our Lady, described by Time Out New York as “brave, expansive, and bracing.”
