GBH News has been honored with six Regional Edward R. Murrow Awards, including the awards for overall excellence and excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion.
This is the second year in a row the public media newsroom has taken home the award for overall excellence.
“During a year when reporters have faced intense challenges, including navigating and covering a global pandemic, racial reckoning and a deeply divided political season, GBH News journalists consistently delivered high quality, contextualized and distinctive local news stories,” said Pam Johnston, general manager of GBH News. “The exceptional work done across our newsroom, and recognized today by the RTDNA, shines a light on the impact and importance of trusted local journalism.”
GBH News is the first recipient of the excellence in diversity, equity and inclusion award for its investigative series The Color Of Public Money, which revealed how minority-owned businesses receive a disproportionately small fraction of government contracts in Massachusetts. The series, an ongoing collaboration led by the GBH News Center for Investigative Reporting, prompted Gov. Charlie Baker to elevate the state agency in charge of making sure state spending with minority-owned businesses is equitable. Reporters Chris Burrell, Phillip Martin and Kirk Carapezza all contributed stories to the series.
GBH News also won the feature TV reporting award for “Boston’s Apollo,” an episode of Open Studio hosted by GBH’s Executive Arts Editor Jared Bowen and the investigative reporting award for Senior Investigative Reporter Jenifer McKim’s story “Parole in MA: Free to Go But Not To Leave."

Reporter Craig LeMoult’s story “Respiratory Therapist Gives COVID-19 Patients Their Breath Back,” won the excellence in sound category. Reporter Adam Reilly’s piece “As Winter Sports Resume Parents and Schools Face a Painful Choice" won the sports reporting category.
These regional winners have advanced to compete for the national Edward R. Murrow Awards. Those awards are expected to be announced this summer.
