Turnkey Access Solutions
For more than 45 years, the Media Access Group at WGBH has been providing accessible media services to the 36 million Americans who are deaf, blind, hard of hearing, or visually impaired.
As an original innovator of closed captioning and audio description, the Media Access Group (MAG) provides services across all media platforms. With offices in Boston and Los Angeles, we customize our workflow based on your content and technology needs.
Captioning
GBH pioneered closed captioning for audiences who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Every year MAG provides access to thousands of hours of live and taped broadcast and cable television programs, streaming content, theatrical movie releases, documentaries, music videos, web videos, museums, and attractions. MAG works closely with The Carl and Ruth Shapiro Family National Center for Accessible Media (NCAM) in understanding FCC policies and rulings pertaining to the local and national deaf and hard of hearing community.
Descriptive Video Service
GBH created Descriptive Video Service (DVS) for audiences who are blind or low vision. Known generically as audio description, the Media Access Group’s DVS team describes action, graphics, scene changes, body language and other key elements of the program without interfering with the key dialogue. Over the past 25 years, MAG has provided audio description for countless hours of PBS programing, broadcast and cable television, streaming content, features films, documentaries and educational web videos.
In addition to what is listed above, MAG also describes multimedia for museums, live events, theme parks, national parks, and other cultural institutions. The Caption Center and DVS operate offices in Boston and Los Angeles.
